Morning Speaker: Anja Townrow
Anja was born in Holland and grew up in a small village in the Polderlands. Having studied English Language and Literature, she moved to Britain in 1974.
Inspired by a patchwork cushion in a magazine in 1977, she started making bedspreads from scraps of old clothes.
Since the 1980’s she has developed her skills by trying out techniques from more widely available American books and magazines.
Since the 90’s she’s made many bed quilts to commission which has enabled her to learn her craft through practice and experience. In 1993 she set up “Dutch Quilts” selling patchwork kits.
Anja taught a weekly class for six years and now lectures and teaches extensively throughout the UK and Europe.
Afternoon Speaker: Sabi Westoby
Sabi has been making since she learned to knit at the age of six. She began making quilts in 1998 using curtain fabric scraps and became hooked.
In 2010 her work took a new direction when she learned to make her own fabrics using dye, print and batik in a much more free and expressive way.
She works in series, concentrating on a theme or technique to see how far she can take it. This has included monochromatic work, digital imagery and painted fabric. She finds the challenge of embracing new techniques and exploring unknown materials exciting.
